Answering Service vs Missed Call Text Back

All three try to stop a missed call becoming a lost job. They do it differently, at different prices. We sell a text-back product and an AI voice option, so we say where we are biased and where a live answering service is the better fit.

Updated 2026-10-13. Disclosure: FoxDevLabs sells missed-call text back (Core) and a Pro plan that adds an AI voice agent. Competitor prices are copied from the vendors' own pages on the date shown and may have changed.

When each one fits

Assumption, not a measured result: the guidance below is our own judgement, not a study.

Text back fits when

You miss calls because you are on a job. The caller mostly needs to know you will get back to them, and you can call back within the hour.

A live service fits when

Callers need an answer on the line, you take emergency calls overnight, or your callers rarely reply to texts.

An AI receptionist fits when

You want calls answered and jobs booked without paying per-call human rates, and you are willing to test what it says before it goes live.

Why speed matters in all three

Fact: Invoca's 2026 home-services benchmark found 52% of callers spoke with a person across all inbound calls, and ServiceTitan's 2026 Residential Survey, as quoted on its blog, found only 50% of contractors respond to new leads within the first hour. Whichever option you pick, the aim is to shrink the gap between the call and the first reply. To see what that gap is worth to you, use the missed-call cost formula.

Questions

What is the difference between missed call text back and an answering service?

A text back sends the caller a text after the call is missed and carries on by text. A live answering service has a person answer the call for you, take a message or transfer it. The first does not talk to the caller; the second does.

What does a live answering service cost?

Listed prices vary by plan. On 2026-10-13, Smith.ai listed Starter at $300 a month for 30 calls with $11.50 per extra call, and Ruby listed Starter at $250 a month for 50 minutes. Check the vendors for current prices.

What does an AI receptionist do that a text back does not?

It answers the phone and talks to the caller, so it can take details and book a job while the caller is still on the line. Our Pro plan at $297 a month adds an AI voice agent to Core. We have not priced or tested other vendors’ AI receptionists for this page.

Can I use a text back and an answering service together?

Yes. Some businesses use a live service for calls during the day and a text back for the calls that still go unanswered. Check that the two do not both try to reply to the same caller.

Which should I pick if I am a one-truck operator?

If most missed calls happen while you are on a job and the caller just needs to know you will call back, a text back is usually the cheapest fix. If callers need an answer or a booking right now, use a service that talks to them. This is our opinion, not a measured result.
